An Interesting Showdown: ChatGPT vs. Deepseek

The race that will change the digital marketing landscape.

The world is no longer the same. Artificial Intelligence is evolving at an unprecedented rate.

ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, and DeepSeek, emerging from China, are two prominent examples of large language models (LLMs) that are reshaping how we interact with technology.

ChatGPT gained widespread attention with its ability to generate human-like text, answer questions, and assist with various writing tasks.

DeepSeek is currently making strides by doing almost the same thing, but with extreme efficiency that can have far-reaching implications on the sustainability and cost of AI.

AI has become a game-changer overnight in many industries, tearing apart established routes of productivity with seemingly limitless potential.

This new form of intelligence loomed over digital marketing like a huge grey cloud, carrying with it torrential rain to crash upon an already challenging landscape or perhaps, the promise of a sun more illuminating than ever.

For marketers (like us!), AI has become a friend—automating tasks, analyzing data, and enhancing productivity.

With epic competition between models like ChatGPT and DeepSeek, it’s time to put to sleep any last doubts that AI is here to stay.

The competitive landscape of AI

The AI landscape is experiencing explosive growth. For 2025, projections in capital surge for the industry sits at a pretty $320 billion.

This rapid development has expanded across industries.

In healthcare, AI enhances diagnostics and robotic surgeries.

In engineering and manufacturing, predictive maintenance and automation streamline production.

Finance relies on AI for fraud detection and algorithmic trading, while Web3 and blockchain benefit from AI-optimized smart contracts.

AI is also revolutionizing e-commerce with personalized shopping experiences and chatbots, and in transportation, it drives self-driving tech and logistics optimization.

On reliability and efficiency: ChatGPT vs DeepSeek

ChatGPT excels in creativity and branding, making it ideal for marketers who need engaging, on-brand content.

DeepSeek, built for speed and precision, is stronger in research-heavy tasks yet somehow shows its limits in terms of research scope.

While DeepSeek delivers quick, concise responses, ChatGPT provides richer, more adaptable insights—sometimes requiring refinement but ultimately offering greater versatility. Transparency is another key difference. OpenAI has been more open about ChatGPT’s development, while DeepSeek’s data sources and compliance remain unclear.

For now, ChatGPT can feel like a more reliable and well-rounded choice for digital marketing.

However, DeepSeek’s efficiency means electricity consumption per query is reduced by about 30-50%, potentially making the resource-heavy AI processes a touch more earth-friendly.

Role in digital marketing

AI fuels—not replaces—creativity. That’s the premise and promise we have.

Despite fears of AI replacing human jobs, marketers aren’t just surviving—we’re thriving. AI has shifted the way we work, but it hasn’t replaced creativity, storytelling, and strategic thinking.

Instead of replacing human ingenuity, AI serves as a powerful tool to enhance it.

For idea generation, AI can assist in brainstorming campaign concepts, but human insight ensures brand authenticity.

When it comes to data-driven insights, AI can analyze trends and predict consumer behavior, but it’s the marketer’s role to interpret these findings and craft meaningful strategies. Even in personalized messaging, AI can generate drafts, but human refinement is what makes them resonate emotionally with audiences.

The future of AI in marketing lies in striking a balance between automation and authenticity.

Efficiency may be AI’s strength, but the soul of marketing—creativity and connection—will always be human-driven.

As AI has helped us take to broader and longer flights, the demand for “better work” from clients can definitely be felt. But when you have a talking assistant with seemingly infinite knowledge at the palm of their hands, you accept the added pressure.

Efficiency dilemma: AI at what cost?

When we use AI however, there’s a footnote that deserves a highlight.

AI’s rapid expansion comes with a hidden cost—energy consumption.

Training large AI models demands an immense amount of electricity, with some requiring as much power as entire cities. This growing demand strains global power grids and contributes to rising carbon emissions, raising concerns about AI’s long-term environmental impact.

As mentioned early on, this is what a contender like DeepSeek can change for the better.

Its model, DeepSeek-R1-Zero, allows to cut energy and training costs. Creators identified some interesting phenomena behind their training procedures that allow their training to converge faster. As a result, they use less resources and consume less energy.

Reports say the environmental impact is drastically reduced through Deepseek’s strategy: up to 92% lower carbon footprint.

As businesses increasingly integrate AI into their workflows, sustainability must become part of the conversation.

While some companies are working on energy-efficient AI models, data centers still consume vast amounts of power. The challenge lies in still striking a balance between AI innovation and environmental responsibility, ensuring that efficiency doesn’t come at an unsustainable cost.

The rise of an “Eastern AI”, onwards ‘Data Diversity’

For years, Western AI models like ChatGPT have dominated. But the emergence of DeepSeek signals a shift, offering Eastern perspectives that could reduce AI’s over-reliance on Western-centric data.

This could be a step in the right direction for brands expanding in Asia, where AI trained on local cultural contexts provides more relevant insights.

DeepSeek achieved ChatGPT-level performance with only $5.6M in development costs, a significant difference from ChatGPT’s $3B+ costs. It introduced an approach that only uses ~2,000 chips compared to ChatGPT’s 16,000+, shaking the traditional models.

While DeepSeek has the potential to reshape AI in the APAC region, its reliability outside China remains uncertain if not promising. For now, marketers should monitor its development but approach with due diligence.

So, what’s next for AI in digital marketing?

AI is here to stay, and adaptation is key. The best AI tools will be those that empower creativity rather than replace it.

At the heart of every campaign, strategy, and brand vision is something AI can’t replicate—human ingenuity. As AI continues to evolve, the real advantage will belong to those who know how to use it wisely.
