3 Things You Need in a Storyboard

In case you haven’t heard yet, everyone is excited about videos in digital marketing.

Unsurprisingly, people are spending more time in front of video content and in 2021, people are expected to spend 100 minutes watching videos every day. This is why this is so important: every good marketing video you see online probably started as a storyboard.

Telling Your Story — FAST!

Here at Weqollab, we believe in the power of video. Our expert magicians build out explainer videos for clients to explain their products and services in an engaging way, as quickly and clearly as possible through a digital screen. Learn more by getting in touch.

For an explainer video (or any video for digital marketing to succeed) it always has to start as a storyboard.

A storyboard develops an initial concept or an idea into something bigger. From a few sentences, it will now become scenes, camera placement, movement, titles, and it will contain more information than just a script.

If you’re working with a creative team, the storyboard also aligns your vision before you even start animating. That saves the team from a lot of rework when the only checking is done near the end of the project.

How do you build a storyboard for your digital marketing campaign?

Before starting your storyboard, you should already have a concept and the draft of a script. Both of these must serve the goal of your video. Some common goals are:

  1. to present your products’ unique value
  2. grab attention, or
  3. build awareness about your product.

Element # 1 Frames – What will your motion graphics project look like?

The frames contain static artwork. They should clearly show the art style, the general look feel of the motion graphics.

These frames make it easy to see if the characters and colours are right and if the whole visual concept is working. Having good frames saves time in case things need to change. At this point, no animation has been done yet.

Here, you can tweak fonts, colours, character design, etc to your heart’s content.

Element # 2 Script and Copy

Voiceover and text on your videos are powerful tools for engagement and clarity. That’s why its important to have it on your storyboard.

The script and copy give you a good preview of the timing of everything and helps the animator add or subtract seconds to ensure the voiceover script has enough time to run.

Copy, on the other hand, can refer to the subtitles, titling, or other written text you’d like seen on your video. When added to a storyboard, it helps you check that there are no typos, the messaging is right, and everything is in tip-top shape before an animator spends hours making things move.

Element # 3 Animation notes

The end product for your motion graphics video will be moving and during the storyboard phase, you won’t see things move yet.

However, animation notes should help you imagine. Notes like “the product slides across the screen” or “the words spin and disappear” are great ways to keep everyone on the same page in terms of how everything will play out in the final product.

Great designs that fit the brief. Isn't that what we all need? This project was a breeze!

CLEAR & CONSICE

The team is an excellent communicator and we thoroughly enjoyed working with them! 10/10 would recommend.

NIMBLE FINGERS

A couple of u-turns were faced throughout the campaign, but the team was always flexible and willing to adapt.

THE ELEVENTH HOUR

As clients, we try to avoid last minute edit requests but it still happens sometimes. Thank you for always accommodating!
