What Is Marketing Momentum And Why It Matters More Than You Think?

The work matters. So does everything that helps it keep moving.

Fast runners give a relay team its speed.

Smooth handoffs help that speed carry all the way to the finish line.

The baton moves cleanly from one runner to the next because everyone knows exactly when to accelerate, when to receive it and when to let go. The handoff lasts only a second, but it often decides the race.

Over the years, one pattern we’ve noticed is how often successful marketing teams work the same way.

Every campaign passes through different hands. It starts with strategy, moves into creative, then production before finally reaching launch. Different specialists take over along the way, but the work keeps moving. What looks effortless from the outside is usually the result of dozens of small handoffs that nobody notices.

It’s Something We’ve Come to Call Marketing Momentum

Working alongside marketing teams, we’ve found ourselves coming back to the same observation. Projects rarely slow down because people aren’t talented or committed. More often, they lose pace when every new conversation starts by reconnecting everyone to where the work stands.

The strongest teams still have meetings, review and feedback. The difference is they spend less time getting everyone back on the same page, so work keeps moving.

It’s something we’ve noticed in our own projects, and broader workplace research points in the same direction. According to Asana’s Work Innovation Lab, knowledge workers spend about 60% of their time on “work about work,” including searching for information, chasing updates, switching between apps and coordinating tasks instead of doing the work they were hired to do.

That’s where we’ve found momentum often slips, not because people aren’t capable, but because the work keeps stopping while everyone reconnects it.

Five Habits To Keep The Momentum Moving

In our experience, campaigns rarely lose momentum because of one big mistake. More often, it happens through a series of small pauses that build up over time.

Working across different projects, these are a few habits we’ve found that help teams keep momentum from one stage to the next:

✓ Make sure everyone is working from the latest version of the brief, files and assets.

✓ Use meetings to make decisions, not to bring everyone back up to speed.

✓ Give new partners enough background to contribute with confidence from the start.

✓ Keep feedback in one place so everyone is working from the same conversation.

✓ Create clear handoffs so the next team knows exactly what comes next.

None of these habits is complicated. Together, they make it easier for work to keep moving.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

AI has made production dramatically faster. Drafts, creative variations and content adaptations now happen in minutes instead of hours.

That doesn’t automatically make execution faster.

In the projects we’ve worked on, the work still moves from one team to the next. Every decision needs enough clarity for the next person to keep moving. As production gets faster, clean handoffs matter even more.

Keeping Momentum

One thing we’ve appreciated about the teams we’ve worked with is that they don’t rely on adding more people every time the workload grows. Instead, they make each transition easier than the last.

That’s also what makes the best partnerships feel different. Rather than starting from zero with every project, they already understand how the team works, how decisions are made and what’s expected. Less time is spent rebuilding shared understanding, leaving more time to improve the work.

People remember great campaigns for the ideas they see. The teams behind them remember everything it took to keep those ideas moving.

That’s what we’ve come to think of as marketing momentum.
